The worst guidebook I've ever purchased. By the time we were halfway through our trip, we completely disregarded this book. You go to Iceland to see the sites, and there are lots of them. This book wants you to study the history and heritage of Iceland and the Vikings. Its trip highlights were overrated. It barely mentioned spots that we found breathtaking while dwelling on sites that we regretted going out of our way to see (and too often pay an overpriced admission fee to see).
I realize the conundrum in what I'm about to say but though I liked the small size of this book, I wish it had more content. It's not a book that tells you where to stay and where to eat but I do wish it gave more detail about the sites and shared inside information. It would have been cool if it said "Hverir is cool and you should stop, but give it only 15 minutes." Things like that would have been useful.I should add, the Ring Road is epic. It's one of the most amazing drives on earth and if you're wondering if you should do it... do it. I recommend that you carry food and avoid the $22 hamburgers at the gas stations. Plan your trip so you are catching sunrises and sunsets because they are incredible. And lastly, plan some detours. The eastern fjords are beautiful -- drive up to Arctic and be sure to visit Kirkjufell on the West Peninisula.
This is a great packable book for highlights of the ring road in Iceland if you are renting a car. If you aren't renting a car and using a tour company, this guide would give you an idea of what attractions are where so you could schedule tours accordingly. There are a lot of nice photos of the must see attractions along Route 1 as well as maps to get you there. There are suggested itineraries for all regions with distances. If you want a more in depth guide to venture off the beaten path I would suggest purchasing "Lonely Planet Iceland" and/or "Frommer's Easy Guide to Iceland" in addition to this book. They are extremely lacking in photos but most small towns are covered as well as back country sites. We bought all three to plan our trip to Iceland.
If somebody said they wanted only one book for a trip to Iceland, this would be the book I would recommend if you're driving around the island. We had three different tour guide books during our recent trip to Iceland. However, the other books weren't used nearly as much as this one was. We pretty much followed the path set by the book. The descriptions for the segments provided great context. The stops had sufficient information. The book gave estimated travel times. We had the part of the trip we were on bookmarked and would read what to expect next. Definitely helped direct our travels and got us to see things we wouldn't have otherwise.I couldn't recommend this book enough.
Perfect for traveling Iceland. My two brothers also purchased maps and guide books but they either had information over load or not enough. This travel guide pointed out all of the important stops and gives you estimates on travel times and time to spend at different locations. It was perfect for our RV trip around the island.
Completely exceeded my expectations! The perfect guide for those planning a 10 -12 day road trip around the country. The book conveniently breaks the ring road trip into 5 segments with the attractions neatly identified....lots of pictures. The "must see" attractions are highlighted. Made it easy to plan where to stop, stay, eat and focus!
Even though our Tmobile phones had unlimited internet, We found many places to visit on our trip during the flight with this book. Then we saved the the locations on our Google Maps app. This way we were able to hit the ground running as soon as we got in our car. It also has a nice map to look at to get an idea of how far certain spots are.
Planning this trip is very exciting but one click online and you have hundreds of websites telling you about thousands of places to visit so it can be very overwhelming plus it’s very difficult to hit up every spot in a limited time the book helped me break down what I could do in my time frame and also Better plan it. Wish it had slightly more pictures but amazing authors!
