I've been a CDB fan for years and attended many concerts. I am a sign language interpreter and have interpreted over 35 shows for Brother Charlie and the CDB. I seriously thought I had heard all the stories. But I was in for a great surprise. These stories are little vignettes and are tasty and satisfying. That is one of the reasons I love interpreting for Charlie Daniels, because his songs are all stories just like his book.I love his style because story songs are understood by deaf folks. So that makes the show accessible.I have also heard the audio versions and to be honest, I may get a set for my car, because his pen is mighty, but his voice is even more powerful.You don't want to skip this book, get it for your library. Its entertaining and uplifting. Something we all need more of these days.Liska Jewell
Have long been a fan of anything Charlie Daniels. Loved this book! Well written, honest, taking the reader along on this incredible journey of a consummate musician and decent, sensible, compassionate man. The title particularly intrigued me, because as a small time composer and church musician, my musical partner and I often would be concerned that our choir concerts wouldn’t attract a decent audience in our little rural community. “Never look at the empty seats†has become our mantra!
Let me begin by saying that when I was in high school in West Virginia and later college, there was no music I enjoyed listening to more than the Charlie Daniels Band. I also appreciated John Prine, the Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet the Allman Brothers and others - but the CDB was my favorite, by far. I really enjoyed this autobiography and learned much about Charlie and his band, the business side of music, the highs and lows of the band, his roots in North Carolina and his time spent (on the edge) in Texas (I've always heard a lot of Texas influence in their music). Stories about his humble beginnings and his band's life on the road, friendships with Ronnie Van Zant and the Allman brothers, his early failed marriage (and later ideal marriage), his seriously injured arm in a ranch accident, etc. etc. I enjoyed it all. I have only two small criticisms: (A) the amount of time he spent pontificating on the topics of religion and patriotism (way too much) and (B) his lack of writing about his best guitarist and co-writer on many of their hits - the unforgetable Tommy Crain. The CDB took a huge hit when Crain retired from the band (and later died at a young age). The Charlie Daniels Band never recovered, in my opinion, when Crain departed. Tommy Crain spent almost 15 years with the CDB, but Charlie sadly gives him maybe ten vague sentences in his book. Crain on stage was as passionate about their music as Charlie was himself. I always felt they made a great team. Sadly, you won't find that here. Overall it was a really good read and I learned a lot about one of the greatest bands and band leaders ever! Go Charlie! Go CDB! Go Southern Rock!
I couldn't put it down, normally I take my time reading but I was so intrigued I read it in 12 hours time. I have always been a fan of the CDB and always marveled at their talent. I think this book contains an important message for young and old, effort, equals results.
I loved this book. So well written from start to finish about one of my all time favorite musicians ever. One I never met, would have loved being with every minute if had the fortune. As a bass player I love his songs but reading his adventures I admire him even more for what he went thru and sticks with. A true hero of music. I will read this book again, now. Thank You Charlie.
Charlie writes from the heart. He covers his career and life in a brief but detailed style. If he wrote about everything that happened in detail the book would be huge! He keeps the "story" moving. He shares his feeling and emotions about major events in his life.He has stated that the hardest chapter to write was about his belief in God. For me it was a chapter I read slowly and several times. He explained his belief and how he came to believe without implying that others beliefs are wrong.
Told in his uniquely engaging, downhome, conversational style, Daniels reveals an array of insights into his personal and professional life openly and transparently. From celebrating his incredible highs to revealing heartbreaking lows, "Never Look at the Empty Seats" delivers readers a riveting payoff — a bona fide page-turner, to be sure.-Christopher Long
Not written like other biographies I've read.it's part biography part opinion piece.he tells some of his life.then sums it up by telling you his opinion.it's straight truth as Charlie Daniels sees it.giving his views & opinions on everything.from the music business,religion,politics.he pulls no punches& hits you with a healthy dose of simple down home honesty.I liked the book.& recommend it.for Charlie Daniels fans or anyone who likes biographies.
