Review
"Shame is indeed a phenomenon that is both in the brain, the mind, and in the space between us. Dr. DeYoung does a solid job in addressing the challenges of living with and treating chronic shame using a thoughtful, humane, and scientific approach." Louis Cozolino, PhD, professor of psychology at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology "Beginning with diverse clinical vignettes with very dissimilar diagnoses, Patricia DeYoung tackles the unvoiced but powerful presence of shame that so often lies at the unspoken core of what troubles our clients. She beautifully and evocatively gives voice and shape to the annihilating impact of lack of attunement. DeYoung also makes the point that because shame takes root in relationship, we must heal it relationally. Equally important, she reminds us that, to be effective in this work, therapists must engage in their own ongoing internal work. This special book needs to be read by all of us." Patricia L. Papernow, EdD, instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School and author of Surviving and Thriving in Stepfamily Relationships "Defining shame as first and foremost a relational experience, Patricia DeYoung unpacks the extensive, damaging consequences of feeling chronically shamed while illustrating effective treatment in clear, accessible language. For clinicians who wish to understand and treat shame from the psychodynamic perspective, this book is a vital resource." Martha Sweezy, PhD, associate director and director of training for the dialectical behavioral therapy program at Harvard Medical School’s Cambridge Health Alliance "Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame by Dr. Patricia DeYoung is filled with a deep analysis of shame, how it operates, and how the psychotherapist/patient relationship can be the primary relationship that heals shame." Janay Anderson, Columbia University

This was a very useful book for me as I worked with a person whose depth of shame led him to dissociate completely from the traumas of his past. His narrative of hideous events was delivered in minute detail, with as little emotion and interest as a shopping list. I struggled to stay awake and at times prayed for the clock to move more quickly to each session's end.Thank you Patricia DeYoung for reminding me that the best antidote for dissociation is active and empathetic listening, and stated identifications with aspects of the client's experience. Staying the course resulted in growing trust from the client, and finally his emotional and physical connection to his narrative. At the same time, the book took me to deeper accommodation of my own chronic shame. Most addictions are based on dulling the pain of chronic shame. Anyone working in that field, as client or counsellor, will find this book extremely useful.
Processing anxiety and anger from child abuse and neglect in an excellent long-term therapy, my therapist and I found ourselves stuck at a deep point after years of productive work, unable to understand some of my recurring anger at her. A Psychology Today article alerted me that my anger might come from shame. I looked shame up on my Kindle and chose this book, which led my therapist and I through processing my shame. Once my shame was processed, the anxiety and anger evaporated. I am grateful to live in a time when we can easily access the work of deep thinkers on very specific subjects via a simple five-minute Internet search. Thank you, Dr. DeYoung.
This book is really helpful. The right brain to right brain techniques gave me some tools to use in my own relationships. In a couple of close relationships, I had no idea how to help the persons get their emotions under control. Left brain logical reasoning was no help to them. They easily went into the fight, flight, or freeze mode over seemingly mild disagreements or inability to perform a task well. This book is not only for clinicians, but also for lay people who know and love overly sensitive, reactive friends who dislike themselves.
Reading this book was such a great inner journey. I could really find myself described in the pages. All of the sudden i has this realization that i am not alone. Apparently the aftermath of shame is very similar and so is the silence that covers it. I am so grateful for what the author shared with me as a reader. Honestly it came at a moment in my life where this book made me feel “normalâ€
This book opened a new horizon for me. For years I have studied in the university and no one taught about the dynamics of shame. I find shame being the essence of many treatments in my clinic. This book helped me to change and deepen my perspective in understanding patients.
This book was written with such clarity and draws from multiple theories to give a full picture of shame and how to treat it. Really well-written.
Very well written. I got a clear understanding of the etiology of shame. Excellent
Extremely helpful book that helps uncover a powerful emotion that remains hidden but ever present in session.
