To those unfamiliar with the Greek financial crisis, well, they should be, because the consequences of the European bubble bursting are potentially disastrous. To the average person the financial crisis in Greece is limited to the scenario put forward by the Troika, that unholy alliance consisting of the IMF, the European Central Bank, and the European Commission. According to the Troika, the fault for the financial crisis in Greece is placed squarely on those lazy, deceitful, shiftless Greeks, who run an incompetent, corrupt, failed state. Indeed, the very mention of “Greece†has become synonymous with financially irresponsible statehood. This, of course, is hardly the whole story.These essays pierce through the hoopla and the posturing and gets to the real story behind the crisis, aided with the critical eye of a trained economist. Galbraith’s book is a collection of unpublished essays, newspaper articles, foreign and domestic, op ed pieces, and essays from other obscure publications commenting on the Greek Financial Crisis. Taken together they are a blow-by-blow account of the crisis, beginning to end. These essays are as good as any conventional book of history. For anyone wanting a clear picture of how the crisis began, how it has been prolonged, and the dire repercussions when the bubble pops, this is essential reading.A theme runs throughout these essays: The Greek Financial Crisis is in fact a highly stylized form of political Kabuki Theater. Or an ancient Greek tragedy. The song-and-dance runs like this: A nation is deeply in debt. A vengeful, unsympathetic creditor imposes impossible conditions for repayment. The debtor nation avows compliance with the conditions. The debtor nation fails to meet those conditions. The creditor relents and advances more debt, making the problem worse. The creditor must advance these funds because everyone knows that the debtor nation holds the ace in the hole; it can declare at any time a default on the entire debt, which would ultimately ruin the creditor. The scenario is played over and over again, the can gets kicked farther down the road, the underlying problem is never resolved, and the eventual catastrophic financial meltdown of the entire European house grows in magnitude. In both the long and the short term, real lives suffer.To be fair, Galbraith’s perspective is not totally unbiased. He is a self-avowed friend of Greece, has served as a financial advisor to several Greek governmental leaders in the past, is a personal friend of Yanis Varoufakis, rock star, and does not buy into the position taken by the Troika.Galbraith is right about one thing. In the face of the financial crisis the Greek people in general and Athenians in particular have persevered with uncommon dignity. Having recently returned from an extended stay in Athens, this reviewer can personally attest to the resilience of the Greek people. Life goes on in Athens, people make ends meet and survive. It is a skill tempered by centuries of living under foreign oppression, whether by the Germans and Franks during the numerous Crusades, by the Ottoman Turks, by the Germans during the Second World War, or, as now, by the EU. The Greeks have been through a lot worse and will still be around well after the EU has disintegrated. It is a skill the other EU nations will never master.
A rather disappointing experience. I expected a blow-by-blow presentation of the events coupled with the economic and political thinking behind them. After all Galbraith would be talking as the horse's mouth. What we get instead is a collection of newspaper and magazine articles --often chronologically disjointed from the events --and with plenty of personal thoughts/reactions/emotions. In my opinion the "book" lacks an academic base.Even worse, it is decoupled from political reality. There is no doubt that Varoufakis (and Galbraith) are correct both in their diagnosis of the ills of the EU and in their suggestions for remedy --I am thinking primarily of the "Proposal". However, there is a huge difference between the academic cum political stance and the realpolitik exercised by the E.U. and par excellence by Germany. Varoufakis could talk to the Eurogroup for hours, he could be absolutely right but all would be --as it was-- to no avail.So, the final judgement has to do with results. What Varoufakis and Galbraith tried to do was 100% ineffective. And in real life and real politics, only results count.I can accept that the ploy could only work if Greece was ready to leave the euro. But the government was not. And, most importantly, Greek society was not. In any case, a country like Greece can withdraw from the euro under an orderly, well-mapped out process. And this did not exist. What we had instead was an emotional reaction --as expressed with the plebiscite-- and a government divided. Not to mention a government with a set ideology -- should I say with ideological preconceptions.Under these circumstances it would have been a pure folly to proceed along the road indicated by the essentially zero-sum game of Varoufakis. And in any case, events have proved the validity of this statement.Galbraith is efficient in castigating the austerity folly of the German-led E.U. As he is quite right in his criticism of Tsipras' shenanigans. This, though, cannot erase the simple and cruel fact that Greece was not prepared to leave the euro. A responsible public servant must recognize this and act accordingly. As such I think that Galbraith has failed to make even this case.
Oh dear, what a mess we find now in this country, the world's oldest democracy! This book is easier to read than it looks, so I plunged right in. How depressing it is to see exactly how many good intentions come to naught. Particularly enlightening for those who have no experience how modern government and its various agencies work, or try to. Poor Greece!
An important book about the gigantically negative effectsof EU policies upon Greece. All of us must begin to re-thinkthings...... And go deeper than the 'media'; much deeper.
This is a collection of articles written by JK Galbraith for newspapers, magazines and conferences (already available online) plus a short introduction, an appendix containing a rough sketch of the "Plan B" and a couple of notes to Y Varoufakis. The text has high repetition (not surprising for a collection of summarizing articles). Unfortunately, the main reason to read the book (details on the plan B, arguments about its feasibility, etc) is simply not there. I wish there was something in the contents that we did not know from what was already publicly available through the media.
Fantastic amount of research made readable. This will become chapter one to the history of the failure of the European Union.
