Dawn Apgar, PhD, LSW, ACSW, has helped thousands of social workers across the country pass the ASWB examinations associated with all levels of licensure. In recent years, she has consulted in numerous states to assist with establishing licensure test preparation programs.Dr. Apgar has done research on licensure funded by the American Foundation for Research and Consumer Education in Social Work Regulation and was chairperson of her state's social work licensing board. She is a past President of the New Jersey Chapter of NASW and has been on its National Board of Directors. In 2014, the Chapter presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. I used Dawn Apgar's study guide for the LMSW exam, and aced it. All I needed was the guide, my DSM 5 and the NASW Code of Ethics. I did a little research on terms that were foreign to me, but otherwise I didn't need any other books. I'm getting ready to take the LCSW exam, and was thrilled to see she has updated the Clinical Exam Guide for changes in the 2018 exam. The guide is well organized, very readable, includes study tips and practice questions. It goes over every area that is needed to prepare for the exam. No need to pay for exam prep groups. Friends have been passing around the previous version of the Clinical Exam Guide. I felt it was worth the investment to get the most updated version.
Very happy with this book. It definitely helped me pass the exam. I would highly recommend!Several things I liked about it1: the overview of every topic that the test could cover helped me identify where I needed to focus. Things I already felt confident in, I could skip, and things I didn't know, I could review in more depth2: the test was also super helpful in helping me understand why I missed what I missed and what I needed to go back and review.You will never feel completely ready for this LCSW exam, but this helped me go in w/ enough confidence that I didn't really have test day jitters and was able to pass!
I ordered this for my wife near the end of her two years of clinical supervision. She was able to study out of the book or, even on her phone. That's a great feature. Whenever you have a moment, you can study no matter where you are. Then, on test day, she passed like I knew she would and, it was a decisive victory.
This book was suggested by a friend that went to the refresher course for LICSW testing. I had failed the first time and she said “buy this bookâ€. It was instrumental in me passing. It helped condense information and got me thinking differently about the testing. I highly recommend this book if you are studying for your clinical exam. Good luck!!
This study guide is definitely comprehensive and a great tool to help you study for the clinical social work exam. The tips and strategies at the beginning of the book are especially helpful. However, I did not like the way the book was laid out. It was kind of disorganized/all over the place, and WAY TOO WORDY! It might also be my style of learning, but I think it would've been helpful if Dr. Apgar included some charts and other visual tools to make the information easier to study. I also noticed some discrepancies between the info in the book and the ASWB's online practice test (nothing too major to be honest... and the ASWB practice test was also much harder than the actual exam in my opinion.) I did pass my clinical exam on the first try (yay!) so this book was ultimately helpful. To fellow social workers out there, I would recommend studying this book, taking the ASWB's online practice exam ($85- worth it because it helps you prepare for the "testing conditions" and it's just very helpful) and taking a test prep class (which I did in NJ through NASW- this book is also provided with the class FYI.) Dr. Apgar is definitely knowledgeable about the licensing/testing process, because she was the chairperson of the Social Work board in NJ. Good luck!
I bought this book several months ago in preparation to take the exam. At first, it seemed similar to the master's exam guide, but upon further reading, it focuses much more on clinical. There are some items repeated from the master's exam guide (stages of development, defense mechanisms, etc). About a month before the exam, I took the practice exam in the back to see where I stood. Then, I read the book cover to cover, highlighted points to go back to, and took the exam again, doing much better. In the week before the exam, I went back over highlighted segments of the book that needed further study. I also downloaded the pocket prep app that has 1000 exam questions and would take a Quick 10 exam whenever I had time. The pocket prep is entirely based on this book, so I was able to look at references for questions I got wrong and go back to the book and read about it. I will say, the pocket prep questions are in general significantly more difficult, wordier and more confusingly worded than the practice test in the back of the book and the actual exam. It is worth it to take practice questions though as a method of studying so you can see their reasoning, but I would expect the exam to be about on a par to the practice exam in the back of the book, because mine was similar. I had also received practice tests and study guides from other sources, but many different prep materials are done by different people and are inconsistent, so it became too confusing and I decided to just focus on this book and the pocket prep. It was definitely enough to pass. I passed on the first try this morning, and felt I was definitely using knowledge used in this book to apply when trying to pick the best answer. I would definitely recommend it.
I tried to rub this off as directed and the foil or whatever wouldn't come off so I scratched harder and the paper came off. It's really frustrating because this is a brand-new book and it just came out so it's not like it's been sitting on a shelf for 10 years. I don't understand why these academic publishing companies always have such terrible customer service. Or why they would make this kind of code on such shoddy paper. I don't know what happened to my particular copy such that it would not scratch off but it's very frustrating particularly since it specifically says the book can't be returned once it's scratched off. And anyway I'm taking the test in a week and half anyway and I don't really have time to be running around chasing a copy of this book so that I can use the app that I'm supposed to be able to access. Based on the practice test that I took, It seems like there's a lot of extra information in this book and maybe not as much focus on the practical information that the test mostly comprises of. We'll see.
Just passed, first try. i Used this book, the NAMI websites psychotropic list, and a glance at the DSM. Nothing adequately prepares you for FIRST/BEST questions where none of the answers are quite right
