Phew, this book is not long, but it took me a year to read. Throughout, John Paul II refers regularly to various philosophers - Aristotle, Nietzsche, many others I've never heard of. Not only am I ignorant of the theories, but the "philosophical proofs" method of writing has always somewhat bored me. For someone interested in simpler, prayer-filled writing, this may not be the best choice.
Without a doubt, some of the most powerful writings of the greatest Pope of the twentieth century. The story behind this book is as powerful as its contents. Over the past 15 years I have recommended this book to many of my non-Catholic, as well as Catholic, friends. Few come away unmoved, some have been comforted, some have been changed. Not for the atheist.
Difficult read from a highly educated man. Helped my Grandson with this book for religion report. Needed some knowledge of pre Vatican II and what changes were made.
A refreshing direct confrontation of the distorted concept of God by a man who obviously recognizes that the true God loves us beyond comprehension.

I'm half way through and the enormity of the insights is overpowering. One example: In the chapter 'How does the Pope Pray?", Pope John Paul says on page 25: "... they (The Church and the Pope) pray for vocations - not only for religious and for priestly vocations, but also for the many vocations to holiness among God's people amid the laity."I look at 'praying for vocations' in a whole new, and enlightened perspective; not just religious, but each of us in our roles as spouse, parent, friend, relative, as well as our particular occupation. Holiness in what we do. What a grand concept.Each chapter answers a question from a reporter inspired by God. The 5 page answers are succinct and bursting with ideas that bring the reader closer to God for many reasons, but one that stands out - I never realized how much God loves us. I still don't, but I'm closer.If the purpose of a spiritual book is to bring you closer to God, then this is the best I've ever read.
In one of the enduring works of his papacy, John Paul II's book length treatise on the philosophical and theological nature of God stands as a masterwork. The late pope also examines the impact of personalism on himself and Catholics and declares it complementary to Aquinasian philosophy. A good read that explains the place of Catholicism in the complicated modern world and offers hope to those who feel that the Church is anachronistic.
