The original Silver Palate Cookbook has been sitting on my shelf since it first came out. It has been such a standard in my repertoire, that I decided to get the updated version. Besides having a fresh, clean version, I am happy to see that the changes made to the book are ones that I like.The biggest changes to the original edition are the inclusion of lots of beautiful photos and either the exclusion or reduction of salt in most of the recipes calling for salt. Updates have also been made to the sidebar notes. For instance:--The entry on pancetta now includes a note on guanciale--Pesto Possibilities has triple the number of things to do with pesto--Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes has been moved to a sidebar along with other suggestions for stuffing tomatoes, both large and small--There are entirely new entries, such as the ones for Pimenton de la Vera, the Spanish smoked paprika, and heirloom tomatoes which were not in vogue at the time of the first editions.Other than that, this undeniable classic remains relatively unchanged. While there are quite a few recipes that might seem to be a bit over the top to today's cleaner, leaner palate, there is page after page after page of recipes that will become instant go-to choices for entertaining as well as weekday fare.
Simply one of the best cookbooks ever written. The author is beyond talented. I think I can fairly say that out of nearly 300 cookbooks this is at the very top of the list, along with their second cookbook The Good Times cookbook. There is simply not a bad dish in the bunch. Seriously. And I'm VERY particular. If I were stranded on an island (with a kitchen LOL) I'd take the Silver Palate Cookbook, The Good Times cookbook, Oh She Glows cookbook, and a couple of others. That's it. Entirely too few really great cookbooks in the world - and this is one.
I bought the ebook version and my review is for thst, not the recipes themselves. The ebook version is clunky, divided oddly and out of place, and not one single picture. I'm reading on a fire 10. Two thumbs down, it's not really usable as is.
This cook book has the BEST recipes! I have made the carrot cake and several people asked me for the recipe. So I gave it to them, along with information about The Silver Palate cookbook in case they want to purchase it from Amazon or wherever. Thanks for a lovely cookbook,
I am so glad I ordered the 25th Anniversary Editiom. My goal is to read it slowly page by page. The beautiful photographs and the memories evoked of my early attempts at cooking are an added bonus. I will be returning to my youth and creating many of these beloved dishes. I can still hear the oohs and aahs of my guests of early years when I served these beautiful dishes. The added bonus is so many of the ingredients are a breeze to come by due to online shopping. It maybe a cliche; but, everything does come full circle...
Great selection of recipes. Was at a club meeting and someone asked which cookbook was a favorite. The Silver Palate Cookbook was mentioned many times. If you like chili, the Chili for a Crowd is a winner.
I have wanted this cookbook for years, and finally ordered it. My daughter-in-law has one, and uses it all the time. I was so impressed with the recipes, can't wait to use it myself. Thank you so much.
This 1972 book was a gift for a friend whose old copy was tattered and unbound. I searched for a nice replacement for awhile before buying it secondhand on amazon.com. This was a barely used hardback edition with a jacket, and she loves it! The recipes are delicious. Many are not particularly healthy since they contain cream or butter, but health-conscious people and cream lovers can both find plenty of things to try. Blueberry soup and mushrooms stuffed with spinach, walnuts and cheese are particularly tasty. I'm trying the ginger pumpkin mousse out on friends tomorrow. You won't go wrong with this classic cookbook.
I've had this cookbook for 25 years, and while the recipes are the same, there is some new commentary, and the pix are now photos instead of the original drawings. While not altogether more helpful in that respect, my old and beloved version is tattered, stained, and really deserves to retire from almost daily use. I have met more interesting people over Chicken Marbella all over the world than any other recipe I "do." It has been a family fixture every July 4th at Lake Almanor for 25 years. I've had it at Passover at friends' homes; and bcs of it renewed relationships with women who really would have preferred to avoid me forever. Sounds weird? Well, there is little in life that crosses all political, religious and emotional borders like food; and there is even less like Chicken Marbella, which can even spark conversations in Urdu (which I do not speak, yet we managed to communicate to each other our passion about CM). If you try nothing else, and believe me, you will try a lot else, do the CM. The ingredient list appears long, but it is very easy. In fact, there is nothing in this whole book that is difficult, yet the results are deeply complex and pleasurable. Rosso and Lukins make me look like a chef instead of a cook and I will bless them forever for it. If you don't have a copy of Silver Palate, try it. If you do have one, you already know what I'm talking about, and you NEED a replacement just as I did.
