Dan Formosa, Ph.D., spent his grammar school years in Hoboken, NJ, the site of baseball’s first recorded game. A consultant to a wide range of companies and organizations, he has received numerous design awards. He also helped create the Masters in Branding Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Dan travels the world frequently in his work. He spends the rest of his time in Piermont, NY, and in New York City—virtually within throwing distance of Hoboken’s old Elysian Fields. He grew up playing stoopball and is a diehard Yankees fan.Paul Hamburger, originally from New York City, is a recent transplant to sunny Los Angeles, where he works as a creative director. Growing up in the streets of Brooklyn, Paul was an accomplished player of stoopball. As a Mets fan, he is bitter and resentful toward the relative success of other local baseball organizations. He lives in the past, nostalgic for the glory days of the mid‑eighties.

After skimming through BASEBALL FIELD GUIDE a few days ago, I did not rate this book very high. The design format is excellent, but there were errors and omissions of some fundamentals that are important, that no beginner could ever pick up on.After spending a little more time with the book, I am upgrading the rating -- it is actually a pretty good little book.I would encourage the authors to take their revisions more seriously -- get the AL and NL teams right. Absolutely no excuse in overlooking this by the authors -- comes across as sloppy. I would also recommend they provide, at the very beginning and reiterated at the beginning of the scoring section, a graphic showing the field, position players and their respective position numbers, and provide more on how to use this organization in the scoring section. Beginners should walk away from this knowing what an "E5" and a "643 Double Play" means.
Excellent primer for those new to baseball. A few of the explanations are difficult to understand only because they involve the ball & players in motion. Still, if you read the book and then watch a game, it all falls into place easily. The writing is simple and not at all high brow. (Lucky for me!).The pages are thin and everything is black ink which is fine considering the price. There are no photos, only diagrams which seem sufficient. What I like is that the book references MLB rules without quoting them verbatim. That would be tedious reading.My one complaint is the shape of the book. I know, that's stupid. It doesn't fit in the book case like all my other books. Even for the pile of books I have stacked it's both too long and not wide enough. Otherwise, I strongly recommend this for those new to the sport of baseball.
My wife and I have gotten back into baseball after a decades long lapse. We wanted a book describing the rules, but something beyond just the official MLB rule book and found this great book. The book describes important rules and comments on them, both in writing and with illustrations. Forgotten about exactly what constitutes runner interference and the penalty for it? Don't remember exactly what the infield fly rule is and the reasoning behind the rule? This little book will explain why in an easy to read format. We always keep this book handy while watching MLB games.
This is a fantastic rules guide that incorporates both the rule itself and practical examples that make the rules easy to understand. As a former little league umpire this guide is a great reference for complicated rules situations. Highly recommend to serious and casual fans alike!
This is really enjoyable to read. I ended up reading it page by page, but if you want to look for specific situations the index makes it easy enough. The illustrations make it easy to interpret. I go this to help ump Little League games and this provided the backbone for rules understanding.
It is clearly written, not overly wordy, and has great illustrations to explain baseball. Best of all is the way it is organized: from the basics at the beginning to more in-depth information later on, it is easy to read and find answers to your questions. It almost reads your mind about what you want and need to know.
My husband and I watch baseball almost every night during the season. The rules have changed and I was always asking questions. That is why I purchased the book for him.
I have been coaching youth ball for many years and am transitioning to officiating next spring. I picked this up on a whim to see what "spooky" corners and strange rule situations it might bring up. I was pleased with what I found. I know most of the rules given my coaching history, but I learned a few I didn't know. Good stuff. This is a great primer to the game for rules geeks.
