About the Author
Dorothy Thurgood Manning was first introduced to Mexico as a teen volunteering with the international health organization Amigos de las Americas.  She later lived in Mexico City as a Fulbright Scholar.  Ms. Manning developed a love for the country, its people and customs.  Upon returning home to the United States, she taught art to the children of Mexican immigrants in the public schools of Napa, Oakland, and Berkeley, California.  Ms. Manning married a Mexican-American and is bringing her children up biculturally and bilingually.  She now spends a part of each year living with her family in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Beautifully illustrated poignant story about Oaxaca, Mexico's Night of the Radishes contest held during the eve of the Christmas holidays. The story is well told and appropriate for children ages 3 to 8, who will be inspired by the delightful tale of Rosita and how she entered the contest. This is a great children's book to learn about the Oaxaca culture, with Spanish words interlaced throughout the story. The pictures are exquisitely drawn with vibrant colors and relevant depictions that attract and captivate the young reader. I highly recommend this book to expand your child's understanding of different celebrations around the world regarding the Christmas holidays, and to appreciate the colorful illustrations that bring the story to life!
Rosita and the Night of the Radishes is a charmingly illustrated book that introduces a custom previously unknown to me, a radish carving contest, dating back to 1897, held every December 24th in Oaxaca, Mexico. Rosita enters the contest to help her family. The water color illustrations are especially beautiful. There are also photographs of the actual contest and a Spanish glossary. My granddaughters loved the book and I did, too!
Beautifully illustrated and engaging, this book is anther excellent read by author Dorothy Thurgood Manning. This is a story about a girl and her family on a farm in Oaxaca. The girl dreams of sisters and winning the local radish carving festival. The story ends with a delightful twist and some real photos of radish carvings at the annual festival in Oaxaca, Mexico. Both of my girls loved it! Highly recommended!
I will admit I’d never heard of the radish carving contest in Oaxaca, Mexico and the thought of carving radishes has never occurred to me. So it was a treat to read this book for the cultural perspective and I really enjoyed the pictures of the actual festival at the end of the book. The book itself is very colorful and appealing with authentic illustrations that bring the story to life.The story itself focuses on Rosita, a lonely only child of very poor parents who work the fields all day while Rosita stays at home. Rosita longs for companionship – there are a couple of boys at the ranch next to her family’s, but they are not very nice. But Rosita’s parents tell her she can come to town with them on December 23rd for the radish carving contest. Everyone is sure she will do well this year.Going about her daily business, Rosita frees a bird from her cat’s grasp. In appreciation, the bird (who happens to be a talking bird) gives her three magic radish seeds and tells her that something wonderful will happen. The seeds grow overnight into large radishes, perfect for carving the three pretend sisters Rosita has in mind. Then it is the big day and Rosita is sure she’s going to win this time.I like how the story handles the competition – that winning isn’t the most important thing. But what happens next takes a pretty strong ability to suspend disbelief. The otherwise realistic story incorporates magical elements common to fairy tales and fables. While Rosita may have thought winning the contest was the answer to her dreams, she finds something much important. If you can suspend your disbelief, the story is charming.The story incorporates a number of Spanish words, which are italicized throughout the story. You can easily pick up the meaning from the context, but there is also a handy glossary in the back. Names are also included italicized, even though they’re not really words.Overall this is a great story with a nice cultural theme and message. Recommended for any library, including home, school or public.

When she is given some special radish seeds, it's not long before a miracle unfolds.Beautifully illustrated, each page is filled with rich colour and lovely details.
