About the Author
Editor-in-chief Francois Vuilleumier has a long association with the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, having served first as the Chairman of the Department of Ornithology before becoming a Curator Emeritus. He is the author of 250 papers and one book and once taught ornithology at the College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine. His research has taken him all over the world, with a focus on South America, allowing him to watch birds from the Canadian High Arctic to Mexico; his life list numbers around 4,000 species. He lives in Piermont, NY.

Huge book loaded with pictures, information about the bird including maps of migration areas. I was both happy and sad to see that it also reports how well the birds are doing as a species (sad when it was noted as "in decline"). A must have for a birdwatcher/photographer looking to identify local birds, or look up birds you haven't seen before.
Wow. I am really impressed. I have purchased most of the major bird field guides and this one truly stands out. It contains such detailed information and points out the diagnostic field markings. It goes above the rest in its class with detailed flight styles and lifespan too. The book is textbook sized, so it is easier to view than other field guides. It is meant to be a home reference as it is too big to take into the field. They should make a mobile app with this info too. I would buy it in a second.
I am a bird lover, however I don't know what they are called at times.... This is better than any field guide, however because of its size and weight unable to carry around... BUT I always come back to this my source, my Bible on Birds. Fantastic any true bird-lover would not be disappointed !!!
Twas a gift to my wife, the hopeful birder. She's been using and raving over it with great regularity. And, added benefit, its size gives one a bit of a workout to lug from table to couch too. But beware, it's more a reference tome than a field aid, unless you're Mister T or the Hulk, of course.
I am blown away by how great this book is. I have a wide collection of bird related literature. After ordering this book, it is now the best in my collection. It's rather large, so if you are looking for a portable field guide it may be too big.
I bought this as a gift for my husband and he loves it! He refers to it frequently. The photos are very good and the info concise and helpful. I highly recommend it to bird lovers.
Best bird book ever! So many large pages with illustrations and information. I wanted this to locate all the birds around my new home and also to draw various birds. I wasnt expecting it to be so big - this is a LARGE book but totally worth the space it takes. I highly recommend it!
Gorgeous pictures to go with the great info. Got this as a gift for my 12 year old along with a monocular so she could word watch and identify a small version of this book would be great for going in the field with. She loves this book!
